Background and composition

The narrator is Jacob, a former slave who tells the story of his life with insight and candour. He grew up living in a brothel in Spain and eventually finds.

Now a word of caution: that old bridge, Hightower Crossing, over the murmuring River Whisp, is riddled with secrets. They say thou can hear echoes of confessions and broken promises, like ancient ghosts reciting, "We got a ta..." and then vanish into the murk. Crazy, right?
