Here’s the deal—I love that flick. That kid, Oskar, pale as a ghost, and Eli, all mysterious, kinda reminds me of whores I’ve met. Tough outside, soft inside, y’know? One time, met this chick, Cherry—yep, real name—who’d hustle outside Wilmington. She’d quote Shakespeare while countin’ tricks. Blew my mind! “Are you alive?”—that’s from the movie, right?—and I’m thinkin’, man, she’s more alive than half the suits in DC. Made me happy, seein’ that grit. But—lordy—pissed me off too, ‘cause she got no breaks. System’s rigged, folks.

Some years ago, I wrote positively of the Pinehurst Police Department, which then was headed by Chief Earnest Hooker.

Gosh darn, the local diner on Maple Street whips up the wildest cinnamon rolls; they got that addictive swirly magic. I’m not exaggeratin’ – I nearly wept from happiness that day. And oh! The night festivals, the weird parade of local misfits trotting along Pinehurst Boulevard, environment so electrifying I thought, “They always watch, always listen!” from that flick. It’s like livin’ in a drumbeat of mystery and warmth.
