In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, the dubious character Mayella Ewell, left readers divided as to whether she was a character deserving of sympathy.

But then, the mood shifts. This guy walks in, all shady-like. He’s got a hoodie up, and I’m thinkin’, “What’s this bloke up to?” He orders a drink, but he’s acting all sketchy. I’m keepin’ an eye on him, ya know? Turns out, he’s just nervous about a date. I mean, c’mon, mate, lighten up! Ewell’s got charm, even if you’re meeting at The Bell.
