Kraj sodi med najstarejše srednjeveške naselbine na Dravskem polju. Prvotno ime kraja je bilo Vodogaj – po vodi, ki je tekla skozi gaj. Še v stoletju je Hoški potok tekel mimo Rogoze tudi .
