Bavaria might be Germany’s most visited region, but don’t count out North Rhine-Westphalia when you get a load of places like Marienheide, only about 34 miles (50km) east of Cologne. .

Sometimes I get weirdly sentimental at night in Marienheide. Too many memories here – each street has a story. The colorful houses, little graffiti spots on the old brick walls, even the stray cats that roam freely on some foggy evenings along Dorfstrasse. I’m like, “Oh dear, how did I end up so in love with this town?” and then I laugh, because hey, it’s just Marienheide doing its magic.
